No one has ever denied Singapore is tiny, but we pack a punch, especially when it comes to museums. Go beyond the ones that dot the civic district and explore these less-known gems. Whether you’re in town for the first time or have been here all your life, these are the ones worth going.

Art: Gillman Barracks

Where: 9 Lock Road

Drop by this arts cluster and browse through galleries hosting the works of both home-grown and international artists. Current exhibitions include Open My Heart, East My Task, Loosen the Knot, which features Speak Cryptic’s distinct illustrations. Dining options in the Barracks are also pretty decent for a quiet date night.

Where: 11 Marina Boulevard

This museum showcases over 200 innovative ideas that have won and/or been featured in the Red Dot Design Award. The gift shop’s got plenty of lifestyle goods for your home, and the café’s a great spot for a good chat by the waterfront.

Owner Alvin Yapp’s collection of all things Peranakan has grown over the years into what it is today – into a home-museum nestled in the heart of Joo Chiat. With artefacts from all over the world, expect fine artistry in every single piece, from furniture to tingkats and clogs. Visits by appointment only.

History: MINT Museum of Toys

Where: 26 Seah Street

Here’s one for the kiddos and for the kiddos-at-heart: 8,000 old-school toys on display from as early as the 1840s to the 1970s. Think space tin toys, Batmans from every era, and plush toys the likes of Winnie the Pooh and friends. MINT also sells drinks at its rooftop bar, which also has wall-to-wall displays of vintage enamel signs from every brand imaginable.

Natural history: Lee Kong Chian National History Museum

Where: 2 Conservatory Drive

From arthropods to dinosaurs, the microscopic to gargantuan – get in touch with mother earth through 15 different thematic zones and over 2,000 specimens in this museum. Purchase of tickets is strictly cashless, so make sure to bring your cards, or buy them through SISTIC.
